Why Organic Fertilizer In Summer

One of the key advantages to organic fertilizers is that they are naturally slow releasing. This means there is pretty much no chance you are gonna cook your turf even if you apply too much. Now, I’m not telling you guys to go out and dump shovel-fulls of organic fertilizer on your lawn, but you certainly don’t need to be too concerned if you do mess up a bit!

Slow release organic fertilizer is also good for your grass in summer because it won’t PUSH the growth. The last thing we want to do in hot August is stimulate the lawn to grow super fast. This will surely stress the root system (especially if you don’t irrigate properly) and cause it to thin out under pressure. Organic lawn fertilizers break down in heat and release nitrogen and phosphorus very slowly, just enough to keep the grass healthy and green, but not overly so.

Finally, organic lawn fertilizers also improve the bio-activity in the soil. Honestly, rich, healthy soil is the basis of a healthy lawn and organics improve it greatly.

Ringer Organic Fertilizer is a popular economical slow release organic lawn care fertilizer with nitrogen:phosphorous:potassium ratios of 10-2-6. Ringer is approved by the Organic Materials Review Institute as an bonafide natural organic lawn fertilizer. Research indicates Ringer provides most of the important nutrients that produce a healthy thick turf, deep green grass leaves and active, healthy root systems. Unlike some other organic lawn fertilizers, Ringer does not contain any manure. Instead its main components are chicken feather meal, bone meal and soy bean meal. No synthetic ingredients are to be found in Ringer Organic Lawn Fertilizer.

Is Ringer Fertilizer Any Good?

Ringer is marketed as a pelleted fertilizer for top dressing on lawns. Its trade name is “Ringer Lawn Restore” and it is available in 10, 20 and 50 pound bags. A 50 pound bag of Ringer Lawn Restore will treat 2500 square feet of average established lawn. A “normal” lawn not showing stress or nitrogen deficiency can be treated with less. Expert opinion on amounts of Ringer needed for effective fertilization of established lawns actually vary widely but I can tell you that 10 lbs of Ringer per 1,000 square feet of lawn will do you just fine, especially if you are following my organic lawn fertilizer schedule.

A drop or rotary spreader works well in spreading Ringer on a lawn needing treatment. The manufacturer recommends watering in of Ringer Lawn Restore to ensure fast results and reduce loss from wind and foot traffic. Keeping the soil damp for three to four days after Ringer application seems to further boost its immediate beneficial effects on a lawn. Keep in mind, however, that a good dose of warm weather is what will truly activate the Ringer in the soil.

Is Ringer As Good As Scott’s Fertilizer?

The macro observable effects of lawn treatment by either synthetic or natural/organic fertilizers (such as Ringer) are about the same. The real differences are only manifest on closer inspection of root systems, soil texture/ content and how the lawn thrives (or fails to thrive) over a period of time. Grass growth resulting from using either chemical or organic fertilizers is essentially equal, according to the manufacturers of Ringer. But over time, advocates of organic fertilizers claim, organic fertilizers are much more effectual than chemical fertilizers because they enhance and texturize soil structure and improve the soil’s moisture and nutrient retention capabilities. Synthetic chemical fertilizers do not enrich the soil, often can cause soil compaction, and their overuse can result in toxin build-up over a period of several growing seasons, posing environmental hazards of chemical run-off into ground water and bodies of water.

Natural organic fertilizers like Ringer Lawn Restore contain live bacteria and microbials which actively “work” into the soil and create a positive environment for grasses to utilize the fertilizer as they actually need it, rather than “force feeding” artificial amounts of nitrogen and other nutrients into the roots, whether they need the feeding or not. Ringer Lawn Restore, like most other organic lawn fertilizers, will not burn the grass no matter how concentrated the application may be, a characteristic related to the natural form in which the nutrients, especially nitrogen, are conveyed to the grass roots.

If you guys have spent any time around here, you know that I am a big fan of Milorganite for lawns. It is a great slow release fertilizer that also contains iron, and iron makes bluegrass lawns deep blue! But enough of that, read on and learn. A friend of mine wrote this quick review on Milorganite:

Milorganite Organic Lawn Fertilizer is natural slow-release organic nitrogen fertilizer. Proponents of organic slow release nitrogen fertilizers praise Milorganite for its slow delivery of naturally occurring microbial nutrients deep into the roots of the grass, a process they believe is preferable to the instant massive release of chemicals characteristic of synthetic chemical fertilizers. Synthetic chemical fertilizers carry with them the potential for burning the grass because of the large amounts of nitrogen and salts immediately unleashed upon application. Milorganite Organic lawn Fertilizer releases nutrients and minerals slowly and only as the grass is able to use and absorb them. Their release is actually triggered by the microbials in the grass itself when the grass needs to feed upon the organic fertilizer.

Milorganite is made from activated biosolids (sewage sludge) and contains 6% nitrogen, 2% phosporous and 0% potassium, lower ratios of each than the ratios contained in synthetically blended fertilizers, but more effective in feeding lawns, advocates say. The slow release characteristics of Milorganite guarantees groundwater is not polluted by fertilizer runoff into creeks, lakes and rivers.

The absence of salt content in Milorganite Organic Fertilizer prevents the drying and burning of lawns, particularly in the hot summer months, something which can occur with quick releasing fertilizers you find on the shelves of local big box stores.

The presence of 4% iron in Milorganite also creates a deeper green in lawns than synthetic chemical fertilizers and helps build a deeper underlying root system or turf, rather than simply increase the height of the grass itself from a thin root base, a common effect of synthetic chemical fertilizers. This results in a healthier lawn overall and one that does not require extra mowing as a result of rapidly growing grass leaves, or rampant “top growth,” a typical result of applications of synthetic chemical fertilizers.

Milorganite Organic Fertilizer is child and pet safe and releases no dust into the atmosphere, which could be inhaled by people and pets, and which diminishes the actual amount of fertilizer that actually is available to treat the lawn.

A 50-pound bag of Milorganite will treat 3100 square feet of lawn and does not require watering in. Watering in will make the fertilizer more quickly available to the grass and the grass will show faster results from the fertilizer application, but it is not required. Because it is essentially “dust free,” Milorganite Organic Fertilizer will not blow off the grass in windy weather prior to rainfall or watering, which drives the fertilizer into the roots and allows the roots to “feed” on the available nutrients.
